St. Francis of Assisi
St. Francis of Assisi was born in 1181 and died in 1226.
He was born into a wealthy family, but after an encounter with a leper he gave up that wealth to live a simple life doing the work of God. This initially manifested in a life of prayer and service to the lepers around the area of Assisi. His life unexpectedly inspired other men to join him. Francis accepted them as a gift from God and called them his brothers. He turned to the Gospels as a guide for how he should live.
